There is a kind of emptiness that can haunt your heart and leave you feeling incomplete, vacant of any worth. It comes from our human nature, which craves significance.
Everybody wants to feel that they are successful and accomplishing meaningful things. The problem with this is twofold: Those who are not successful in their endeavors find that their core worth is diminished or destroyed by their failures; on the other hand, successful people often crave more and more success and are never satisfied. This is because our core worth is not actually based on how much we can accomplish.
God offers a way to find significance that will last. “Don’t waste your time accumulating stuff on earth,” Jesus says, “where thieves and inflation and disasters can take it all away from you; but invest in heaven, where none of those things can threaten your investment. If your work is on heaven’s purposes, your heart will be in heaven as well.” (Matthew 6:19-21)
